The buildings

Rare survivors of medieval Coventry

Much of Coventry's old centre was lost in the Blitz. These buildings came through, and have been carefully restored as places to stay.

1415

3–6 Priory Row, also known as Lychgate Cottages, is built as a row of jettied timber-framed houses. It is a rare pre-Dissolution survival at the heart of the city.

1440

Swanswell Gate is completed as Priory Gate, the entrance to the prior's land. It was one of twelve gates in the city walls.

Today

Swanswell and Cook Street are the only two city gates left standing. Remains of the wall run through Lady Herbert's Garden next door.

Priory Row overlooks Broadgate and Holy Trinity Church. Swanswell Gate sits on Hales Street, a few minutes' walk away. Independent shops, restaurants and pubs on the Burges and Hales Street are on the doorstep.
